Has much of value and interest to offer birdwatchers
Backyard Birding In The Northeast United States by Elmer Waldemar Eriksson is an extensive and "reader friendly" guide for backyard birdwatchers. Covering the do's and don'ts of bird feeders and bird food; how to deal with squirrels; providing nesting sites; and a great deal more, Backyard Birding In The Northeast United States is a 120-page satisfying introduction to the wonderful and pleasant hobby of birdwatching in the northeastern region of the United States. Enhanced with numerous appendices from attracting hummingbirds, to James J. Audubon, to the possible life spans of North American birds, Backyard Birding In The Northeast United States has much of value and interest to offer birdwatchers elsewhere in the country as well!

The Battle of Gettysburg: A Guided Tour

Concise yet complete tour guide with great graphics
The editorial reviews on this paperback are right on the mark. It is an excellent 124-page booklet that follows the formal tour guide route.
The front tour section starts by providing just the right amount of "selected" detail (with some well-cropped and selected photos)on each of the 16 stops (36 pages). I was able to take the book out and use it as a quick stop tour. I found the positons easily (as they were concisely marked), then read the short, but complete narrative. I really got the context of the complete battle by putting all the tour stops together because the "important details" were included at each stop.

After the tour, an account of the fighting is described by day, hours and short descriptor, e.g."Action of Buford's Calvary, 8:00 to 10:00 am, July 1" (78 pages). Superb graphics that clearly sketch out positions with key topography markers help you fix on the formations. They are very distingushable as they are marked with reference to the modern day road structure in he park (e.g. you can tell the bulk of Pickett's division-by brigade-was originally lined up much farther south than the positon of Lee's statue in their charge by the Spangler house).

The final pages of the book summarize the strength and losses by unit (i.e. numbers by brigade level, but specifying the regiments included) and a good one-page suggested reading list (that shows the better Gettysburg books).

I have been to this field five times. It is a very good book for new and repeat visitors.

Bed, Breakfast & Bike Northeast

A New Englander's Cyclist's Dream Guide
More than just a cycling guide. Bed, Breakfast, & Bike Northeast is chock-full of information about local sites and attractions, plus useful Websites and local travel and biking resources. Makes weekend and getaway planning simple. And, the scenic routes (more than 70) outlined in the book make great tours whether you're traveling on a bike or in a car (when the riding conditions are less than optimal, of course). A must have for exploring the backroads and byways of the Northeast.

The Best for Less

A great reference book for NYC bargain shoppers
This book has been my bible for the last six years. Every bargain shopper should have a copy. Although it is slightly out of date, this book tells the consumer where to get goods and services for less in New York. The author has personally visited every store and gives the reader the inside scoop on what to expect. Some stores even give additional discounts if you bring in a copy of "The Best For Less". I am disappointed that this great resource is not readily available, because it is the best book of it's kind

Best New Hampshire Drives : 14 Tours in the Granite State
Published in Paperback by Jasper Heights Press (June, 2001)
Authors: Kay Scheller and Bill Scheller
Average review score:

Wonderful travel guide
My wife and I recently decided to drive through New England, mainly visiting Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. On a friend's advice, I bought the Scheller's Best Vermont Driving Guide and after reading that, went out and bought this guide to New Hampshire. Both of these books are absolutely terrific, giving you information about places that is just about impossible to find anyplace else. There are lots of interesting tidbits that made our trip a lot more fun, and the books have a nice sense of humor, unlike a lot of dry guidebooks. We did two of the recommended drives in each state and found them very rewarding. Using the guide books, we were able to discover little hidden places like small museums and other attractions that we never could have found on our own--and we met some really great people along the way, too. If you're planning to drive through VT or NH I highly recommend both of these books.

The Best Places to Kiss in New England: A Romantic Travel Guide (Best Places to Kiss)
Published in Paperback by Beginning Press (June, 1993)
Authors: Pamela P. Hegarty, Paula Begoun, and Miriam Bulmer

Best New England B&B book
This book is now nine years old and I am sure some of the places have either changed hands or closed but for the ones that have not changed, this is the book to read about them!!

By far the best book we have ever used for finding B&Bs in New England and we still use it today. We have marked all the places we want to go and thn we date the book when we do finally get a chance to go.

Pamela Hegarty (the author) has an incredibly wonderful way of describing the places in the book and my wife and I cherish even just reading about the different places to go.

Big time two thumbs up! Just wish she would write a revised second edition!

BTW, if you read the book, go ahead and read about Breakwater 1904 in Bar Harbor, ME. The description will make you salivate and the B&B was as good as she made it out to be. Unfortunately it is now a private residence and you cannot go.

Best Places to Stay in the Mid-Atlantic States

highly recommended for travellers
If you're tired of staying at Motel 6 on every trip, this book provides you with some great options throughout the Mid-Atlantic. The author really did his research, and he gives you a really detailed picture of every inn and hotel listed, from the most interesting dishes on the dinner menu to the exotic and/or amusing history behind some of the establishments.
